Corona Virus Update

11/30/2020

Like a lot of small businesses we have been severely affected by the Corona virus and the limitations it has placed on overseas travel. You may have noticed that we are sold out of French armoires and mirrors and sadly at the moment we have no idea of when we will be able to restock.
We took the decsion earlier in the year to diversify our offering slightly and stock a small selection of antique and vintage garden  furniture. This venture was very successful and we plan to extend the range of vintage garden items in the new year.
In the meantime thank you for visiting our website and please do return in the new year when hopefully life will be a bit more normal for all of us!

Le meilleur café! Vintage and Antique French Coffee Grinders

One of the first items we discovered when we began brocanting in France was the iconic French coffee grinder. I had never seen these beautiful items before and was capivated from the start.

I love a good cup of coffee in the morning and nothing beats the flavour you get from beans finely ground by hand in one of these charming pieces.

Over the past 10 years we have bought and sold an incredible range of French coffee grinders, from open brass hoppers to painted boite et tirior, classic Art Deco to stunning shiny chrome.

Having handled, cleaned and repaired so many differing styles John has become an expert in identifying individual makers and in aging each coffee grinder we buy.

Some grinders still have the makers mark - which helps age and identify them, others are more of a mystery! These can be aged by their shape and the materials with which they have been made.

The most famous maker is Peugeot Freres (the 'Peugeot Brothers'). Now best known as makers of cars, the brothers owned a foundry at Valentigny where they designed and patented the now familiar ‘box and drawer’ design in 1840. Their invention was an immediate success and by the time of the Great Paris Exhibition in 1889 they were producing half a million grinders a year.

Buying and renovating to Order

Dazzle Vintage Furniture was born out of a love for authentic French armoires. When we first started importing armoires to the UK it was solely to stock our website. It wasn't long before we began receiving commissions from interior designers and that side of our business has flourished over the years. The upside is that now when we go to France we go with a shopping list and buyers ready and waiting when we get home. The downside is that less armoires make it to the website for general sale.

One of the commissions we completed was for Ursula from Room to Bloom, an interior design company specialising in creating beautiful spaces for children. Ursula wanted a petite, fully shelved antique armoire painted in a Farrow & Ball grey. The picture above shows the finished armoire looking spendid in its new home!

It's always worth getting in touch if you can't find what you're looking for in our shop. We often have pieces waiting to be renovated. Recently a customer contacted us looking for a very plain, shaker style armoire that fully knocked down to allow for tricky access upstairs. Luckily, we had 2 beautiful Louis Philippe armoires in stock which hadn't yet been put up for sale.

The customer choose the armoire below which we then renovated to her specifications.

We visit France regularly and will be off on our travels again in September. If you would like us to look for a specific style or type of armoire then get in touch!

We specialise in sourcing and selling authentic French armoires. We buy, renovate and sometimes paint antique and vintage armoires which are personally sourced by us in France. We work with interior designers and private clients, sourcing pieces by request. We also sell pieces online in our shop where all items are sold with free delivery to mainland England & Wales.

Sourcing French Armoires in France

French furniture
My partner John and I started started selling authentic French furniture in 2008. It all started with an impromptu visit to an antiques shop in Provence. I fell in love with the armoires, so beautiful and so practical.  I just knew that if there was some way of getting these wonderful French cupboards transported back to Devon I could sell them.

At that time I was working as an antiques dealer, specialising in Edwardian and Victorian compactums. Huge, heavy pieces which were amazing to look at but heavy and unweidling to move and store. French amoires seemed to be the perfect antidote - large and capacious yet fully knockdown, unassembling into easy to lift pieces.

What followed from that Provencal trip was 6 months of research, frustration and at times sheer disbelief. Initially, I sought transportation quotes and was aghast at the sums suggested. Eventually John and I decided to do it ourselves and somewhat blindly took the ferry to France, driving around making enquiries and contacts as we went.

That first trip was scary but exciting. We found some beautiful pieces and found that our customers loved them as much as we did. Since then, we haven't looked back and regularly visit France sourcing armoires for clients and for the website.

In the intervening years we've built up strong friendships with other dealers in France as well as a good knowledge of the best antique fairs, brocantes and Vide Greniers.

It all looks very glamorous but it can be very hard work. The up side has been getting to know so much of France. We've travelled widely and been fotunate enough to visit some wonderful places. The downside is the reality the buyers rarely see, lifting heavy furniture, cleaning years worth of dust, woodworm treating, and all the renovating that goes into making our armoires so saleable and beautiful.
Buying at French brocante
In the years since we started importing French amoires, many others have followed suit. Competition is not a bad thing but we like to think our knowledge and experience puts us that little bit ahead.

You can see just a small fraction of the antique and vintage armoires we have sold  in the intervening by visiting the French Armoires sale page and scrolling down. We're proud to have a great number of repeat customers. Hopefully they, like us, believe that l'original et le meilleur!

As well sourcing beautiful antique and vintage French armoires, we also buy antique mirrors and French decorative accessorires. To see our current stock follow the links at the top of this page.

Happy New Year in France

It's always good to start a new year with fresh ideas. We've been blogging on an external site for several years now and have decided instead to start hosting our blog here, on our own website.

We are a thriving, small, independent UK business. We're proud of our customer service and of the quality of our items. We always like to go that little bit extra, whether that's arranging free delivery or providing custom assembly guides for each of our French armoires.

On this blog our aim will be to celebrate small, independent businesses. We want to help champion other service providers, who like us, put the experience of the customer first.

When it comes to buying and selling online all too often the leading websites are large US owned portals (such as a certain very well known auction site). Whilst such sites do allow small businesses to showcase their products to a vast audience they are often expensive to use, charging excessive commission. Most small businesses have no option but to pass this extra cost on to the consumer.

So, the message we want to promote is - wherever you can, buy direct. When you buy directly from a small business you benefit them by helping them to grow and most often you'll also save money. Nearly all the professional sellers on auction sites and other selling portals will have their own website. Google them, buy direct and help to keep small UK business alive!
