A beautiful antique Pigeon lamp. This dates from around 1900, the time of the great Paris Exhibition. This style of lamp was invented by Mr Pigeon. They were the first household lamps to be available and gradually replaced the use of candles for lighting in the home. The lamp is guaranteed ‘Inexplosable’, the engravings on the handle guarantee that anyone who’s lamp does blow up receives 10,000 francs! It is understood that there were so many dubious claims that Mr Pigeon withdrew this offer in around 1910. The ‘Garantie Veritable’ is engraved on the handle. This type of lamp was often referred to as a ‘vintners’ lamp as the vintner took it down to the cellar to hang on a special bracket whilst he choose the evening’s wine.
Condition: This oil lamp is in excellent condition having been recently cleaned and refurbished. It comes fitted with a wick and is ready to use. It still has the original ‘snuffer’ on a small chain. The side winding wheel no longer works, but it is easy to push the wick up a fraction after use. It burns with a steady bright flame.
