A stunning large French antique armoire from Normandy. Made of pitch pine, this dates from the late 1800s and is a marriage armoire - a piece specifically made as a gift for a couple on their wedding day. It is hugely decorative and features beautiful hand carved images of love birds, flowers and foliage. The carvings represent love, fertility and prosperity. Externally the wood has a lovely aged patina which contrasts beautifully with the brass hinges and escutcheons. Internally the armoire offers exceptional storage with 5 adjustable shelves and 2 large interior drawers. Note that only the central shelf is original, the remaining 4 are more recent replacements. The armoire comes with a fully working key.
This armoire is fully knockdown, dissembling into manageable pieces for ease of transport.
Condition: Very good. As with all French furniture of this age there are idiosyncrasies and some small areas of scratches/cracks to the wood. It is structurally very sound once assembled.
Measurements: H: 224 cm, W: 139 cm (widest point - cornice), D: 48 cm
