A beautifully characterful original French oil painting in a gilded gesso frame. Dating from the 1800s, this is signed 'S. Henry' and is painted in a charming traditional style. Found at a brocante on the outskirts of Rennes, the scene is rural Brittany. The central figure wears the traditional Breton costume of a dark dress, apron and shawl. Her white 'coiffe' is perfectly placed to counterpoint the large chestnut trees which frame the composition. She carries a basket as she walks through a hay meadow in late autumn. Although slightly darkened by age the subtlety of the colours and the delicacy of the fine brush work are still readily apparent.
The gesso frame is in remarkably good condition for its age and to the rear the canvas has been mounted over a simple H frame stretcher.
